I particularly love the spiritual reference that just as every wave is part of the ocean, or rather IS the ocean, every individual is the universe or pure consciousness.
Here is another version of the ocean and waves being a spiritual metaphor: The wave doesn't experience itself, it is the ocean that experiences itself as the wave. Likewise, you are consciousness, experiencing yourself as a person.
